Few rivalries stir as much passion and divided loyalties as when you have a house divided. USC and Texas A&M faced off in the Kubota College Baseball Series, and we were torn between cheering for the Trojans and the Aggies. One of our favorite phrases, "I hope both teams have fun," was mentioned quite a few times, proving that the love for college baseball runs deep, even when allegiances are split right down the middle.
We watched three games. In the first, it was Texas A&M versus Arizona State. Starting pitcher for the Aggies, Ryan Prager, and reliever Evan Aschenbeck were all Texas A&M needed to shut down Arizona State. Prager delivered an impressive 80-pitch performance over five innings, allowing just one hit and two walks while striking out eight. Aschenbeck secured his first save of the season with a four-inning stint, yielding only one hit and striking out four. Final score: Texas A&M 4, Arizona State 0.
In the second game, USC started strong, holding a 1-0 lead through four innings thanks to pitcher Tyler Stromsborg's seven strikeouts. However, Texas A&M's offense exploded in the final five innings, scoring nine runs on nine hits and seven walks. Final score: Texas A&M 9, USC 3.
That night, we ate at Mariano's Hacienda restaurant, famously known as the home of the world's first frozen margarita. The décor is a mix of rustic Texan elements and vibrant Mexican accents. The walls adorned with memorabilia and photos tell the story of the restaurant's storied past, adding a sense of history and authenticity to the dining experience.
Like the first game of the tournament, we all rooted for Texas A&M in the final game.
The Aggies came out swinging, scoring all 10 of their runs in the first three innings. The highlight was watching Brayden Montgomery hit a grand slam in the second inning. Justin Lamkin's strong start and Zane Badmaev's relief appearance ensured the Aggies' victory, despite some late runs from Arizona State. Final score: Texas A&M 10, Arizona State 5.
As the season progresses, the Aggies will look to build on this momentum, aiming for continued success on the diamond.
