There's nothing quite like combining the excitement of an NFL game with the magic of New York City. Our recent road trip to the Big Apple to watch the Chargers take on the Jets was an unforgettable adventure filled with iconic sightseeing, a dash of nostalgia, and plenty of sports action.
First stop was Times Square. The dazzling lights, bustling crowds, and iconic billboards made it a sensory overload in the best possible way. One of the highlights was watching "Back to the Future: The Musical" on Broadway. The show brilliantly brought the beloved 80s film to life with incredible performances, stunning special effects, and a nostalgic soundtrack.
After the show, we went to the iconic Ellen's Stardust Diner. This 50s-themed diner offers more than just delicious comfort food—it's a full-blown entertainment experience. As we enjoyed classic American dishes like burgers, fries, and milkshakes, the talented waitstaff serenaded us with Broadway hits and pop classics.
In the next two days, we fit an incredible amount of activity into our itinerary. We started with a visit to the World Trade Center and the 9/11 Memorial which was a poignant reminder of the city's resilience and strength.
We went to FAO Schwarz and played "Chopsticks" on the giant piano, channeling our inner Tom Hanks from Big. Then we went to the Today Show Plaza for Van Leeuwen Ice Cream and ended the night ice skating at Rockefeller Plaza under the lights of the Christmas tree.
The next day we went to a tour of Yankee Stadium. The current stadium, opened in 2009, stands as a modern homage to the original "House that Ruth Built".
Our tour started with a visit to Monument Park, a sacred area located beyond the center-field fence. This outdoor museum pays tribute to the greatest players in Yankees history. As we walked through, we saw plaques and monuments dedicated to legends like Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, and Derek Jeter.
The tour provided a unique perspective on what makes this franchise so special, beyond the wins and championships. It's about the legends who have donned the pinstripes, the moments that have defined the sport, and the enduring spirit of the fans who bleed Yankee blue.
After leaving Yankee Stadium, we had lunch on Arthur Avenue in Bronx's Little Italy.
Our next stop was Coney Island to walk along the boardwalk and have a hot dog at Nathan's.
Our last stop before heading to the game was at Liberty State Park. We had an amazing view of the Statue of Liberty and the New York Harbor.
It was finally time for Monday Night Football at MetLife Stadium. Located in East Rutherford, New Jersey, the stadium is one of the largest in the NFL with over 82,000 seats.
Chargers rookie Derius Davis set the tone of the game with a 87-yard punt return for a touchdown in the first quarter. Despite holding the Chargers to just 191 total yards, the Jets struggled offensively, unable to recover after falling behind early. Zach Wilson passed for 263 yards but was sacked eight times. The Jets' three-game winning streak came to an end with a 27-6 loss.
In our quick three-day trip, we made the most of every moment, exploring iconic landmarks, indulging in delicious cuisine, and immersing ourselves in the vibrant energy in the city that never sleeps. In the words of Frank Sinatra, "New York, New York, it's a helluva town," and we couldn't agree more.
